28 | “Start before you’re ready”! Everyone's universal answer to procrastination. But has anyone ever explained HOW we can accomplish this?

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

"Start before you're ready."

"You don't need to be great to start, but you need to start to be great."

Welcome to episode Number Twenty eight of moment is podcast. Today we're going to talk about an interesting topic, a kind of cliche sentence that we hear here and there that please start before you're ready, and we want to see how is it possible to do that, you know, because it is important to do something which is doable, not just thinking of it and not just hearing about it here, and they're so, have you heard about this sentence? That you don't have to be great to start, but you need to start to be great. You know, I was hearing about this sentence back before, whenever I was a student, or whenever I went to my workplace for the first time, and whenever I had any kind of fear of doing something, someone come around and just tell me about this sentence. But for the most of my life I thought that maybe it is not doable, maybe it is not something that I can do do it on a regular basis, and I think that I've procrastinated a lot of things in my life because of just not believing in this sentence and the fact that recently, specially the last two or three years of my life, I'm doing this sentence on a regular basis made me to come to you and talk about what I'm doing in order to just implement this sentence. Maybe it can help you in some way. So, before diving into today's top because I want to tell you some kind of memory. You know, looking back on two or three years ago, the moment that I wanted to start a podcast, which was mamanest podcast. It was in my heart, it was in my head and I wanted to just do something for that. But, you know, I was really wondering whether or not I can do it,...

I was wondering whether my voice really matters for anyone, and also I was wondering how on earth I can record a podcast, publish it, promoted and all of the other stuff. But today that I wanted to record the I mean today's podcast, the episode, I went and I pour a cup of coffee for myself and then the moment that I sat in order to record this podcast for you. Really it was interesting for me because, looking back on those days, the first days of having a podcast, I can vividly remember how hard it was for me, how complicated, how weird, you know, and you know I haven't, I haven't even thought about pouring a cup of coffee and starting to record a podcast without any kind of content or outline or anything, and you know. But now I'm here and the moment that I started to record the first episode of the moment as Podcast, it was a kind of very, very, very weird moment of doubt, of not being a hundred percent sure of what I was doing. But I did it, you know, and I committed to do that for at least one episode each week or two week and for me personally, for me as a mom who hasn't who had a newborn at that time and has a toddler at this time, and for me with these kind of business in my life, which is not only in my business but also in my personal life, I have a lot of huge, huge changes in the way and for me personally, these achievements of having twenty eight episodes in Persian, twenty eight episode in English, which makes it like fifty six episodes total was a perfect achievement. You know, in this maybe one and a half years that passed from the beginning of the moment of podcast, fifty six episodes have published, and this is a great achievement for me, and when I'm comparing myself to myself in the in that year that I began. So it is not comparable at all. Maybe I could be a kind of example , example for this topic that I'm going to talk about today. So let's get to today's topic that we don't need to prepare, we just need to begin. So I want to tell you something about the comfort zone. You have heard about the comfort zone to I'm sure you know that all of the times we tend to stay in the comfort zone whenever we are going to try something that we haven't tried before, whatever we're going to do something that you haven't done before, whenever we are going to, I didn't know, a go somewhere that haven't come before. So we think that we cannot do that. We feel overwhelmed, do we feel stressed and we don't like to step out of our comfort zone. So this is actually the comfort zone theory that can help us to understand what is it that's going to happen? The Comfort Zone theory says that we really tend to stay in...

...a very comfortable, stress free, risk free position in our life, which is a behavioral state in fact, and we tend to not leave this comfort zone because, as it is obvious from the name, it is comfortable for us. It is comfortable for us and we don't want to leave it. But the moment that, for example, because of a deadline or anything in our life, we decide to do something which we haven't tried before, we can feel fear. We can feel fear of the result, fear of how on Earth we can do that, fear of everything that leads to stress, that leads to anxiety or anything. So at that time we have stepped out of a comfort zone and we are now in the fear zone. So fear zone is just right after the comfort zone. And the moment that we understand that we need to do something in to overcome this fear , and the moment that we understand that we need to acquire a skill in order to just tackle this challenge that is in our list, that we need to just, I don't know, do that. That thing that freaked this out that moment we are stepping out of the fear zone and we are entering the learning zone. So learning zone is, after the fear zone, learning zone. is an interesting place. It's a happy place that we think that we are doing something for the achievement of our goal, and so it is so interesting for us and we might forget about the result of what we are doing in this place, and I'm sure that you've experienced that before. So this is the learning zone and the moment that we and you know, there aren't really any clear boundaries between learning zone and growth zone. So you might find yourself at the end of the spectrum in the growth zone, so happy, so honored because of achieving something, and so you have passed all of these zones in order to grow. So the first step was stepping out of your comfort zone, and then stepping out of your fear zone and then stepping out of your learning zone, and then you grow. This was the process of growing. Yet it doesn't really matter for whatever we are doing. We need to pass all of these zones in order to grow. So the very first sentence that I told you in this episode was start before you're ready, and you know for me personally, this sentence can mean that we are on the edge of the comfort zone and we are just wondering whether or not we can just step into the fear zone. And so we need to know what are the tactical ways that we can step out of a comfort zone. Then we can enter the fear zone, and then learning zone and then growth zone. So imagine yourself in this place and in this edge of the zone. So we're going to see what we can do tangibly, what we can do in order to Tackle that. As always, I'm going to focus on just actionable steps. You know, maybe they seem bite size, but they are actionable. So we need to focus on something that is practical, that can be implemented, and we need to do that for whatever goal or whatever action that we are procrastinating, that we are making excuses for them, for not doing them. So please bring a pen and paper and write down on your piece of paper number one. In in the first step, step number one, I want...

...you to pick a goal or action that we're procrastinating at a regular basis, that you're making excuses for not doing that and you're wondering whether or not you can start before you're ready, because you have a sense that maybe starting before you're ready is a solution, and I've explained it to you in the comfort zone and growth zone and stuff. So you understood that. The first step maybe is starting before you're ready, but we need to know how we can do that. So in the first place, I want to pick that goal, pick that task that is in your least, waiting for the perfect time to start, but that perfect time never arrives. So we can just write down that goal or that task on your piece of paper. And the second step I want you to write down what are the reasons that you are delaying this? What are the reasons that this task is delayed? Maybe it is delayed because of the reason that is not related to you, because of the reason that it is related to other people or other resources or anything. Please write down those reasons, because it can help you to find out a solution, to start, to find out some way in order to start small. So this was the second step. In the third step, I want you to define a deadline for yourself in order to do that task. Take, for example, you want to take the aisles exam. So the IELTS exam is in your list waiting because of a reason. Maybe you need it for the immigration processes, maybe you need it for your admission at the university or anything. So, for whatever reason, this kind of goal is in your list. It has a deadline. So you need to find that deadline and then put it in your piece of paper that I need to take this IELTS exam until this time. Maybe you have only three months in order to tackle this test. So please write down the exact date and number in your piece of paper so so that it can help you, it can force you in some way to start. This was the third step. In the fourth step, I want you to write down the resources that you need in order to just do that action or take some actionable steps towards that goal. What are the resources that you need? So, in our example taking the aisles exam, maybe you need the resource of money in order to register that exam. Maybe you need to resource yourself a tutor in order to teach you the techniques of taking the IELTS exam. Whatever that are the resources. Please write them down on a piece of paper, because it can help you in a ton of ways to understand. Where are you now? What what is your position now, and the fifth step, I want you to define the resources that you have. So out of the list that you're seeing just in the previous step, you are highly likely to have some of them at least. So please write them down, because it can help you to be mindful of the fact that you're now somehow ready for starting something. So please write them down. Maybe, out of the list that I've told you in the previous step, you now have, I didn't know, the books that you need in order to start doing some action for that, I don't know, task or...

...that goal of taking the IELTS exam, or maybe you have the money to register or anything. So please write them down, because it can help you to understand that you are somehow ready to start. So this was the fifth step. In the sixth step, I want you to set a daily routine task in order to achieve that goal or action. So what do I mean by that? For example, in the example of taking the IELTS exam, you can set a daily task of writing a piece of writing. So writing a piece of writing or, I don't know, doing a kind of listening test each day, doing one listening test each day. So this is a daily routine task and for whatever reason that is in your mind that you are not ready to start or anything. You don't need to think of the end result, which is taking the IELTS exam. Just need to focus from now on on the daily task that you have written on your piece of papers. So take, for example, it is taking a kind of listening test each day, which really needs around thirty, two, forty five minutes a day. So you need to be committed to this task and after a while you will see yourself on a learning zone or the growth zone, and you can see a lot of growth in your path. So we just need to set the daily task in the six step, which you need to do it on a regular basis, and then you need to focus on that daily task. So all you need to do is to set that task and then prioritize it on your daily schedule. So you have a daily schedule for yourself. You have planned out anything in your piece of paper every day for that day of your life. Now that you have defined another daily task for yourself, which is based on the thing that you have procrastinated before, you need to add it to your daily schedule and then you need to prioritize it so that you can be a hundred percent sure that it is something that you are committed to that. So please prioritize that, at least for some weeks, because it can help you to step out of the fear zone and enter the learning zone. And when you're in the learning zone, because it is an interesting and happy place, you will just continue that and you are not really worried about stopping that or blocking that, because most of the times we are really suffering from the mental blockage in our life, the mental blockage of not being sufficient, the mental luckage of not being ready. But the moment that we do something, we understand that maybe we are not really, I don't know, unqualified, or we are not really maybe not enough to start something. So in the seventh step, I want you to start just now. So for whatever reason that you have written something, a daily task or anything, on your piece of paper. Take, for example, it was taking a listening test for the IELTS exam each day. So please, please set aside your pen and do it right now. So you have defined this daily task based on the resources that you have now. So it means that the the task that you have defined is based on the resources that you have at the moment and you just need to start just now. So please set aside...

...your pen and then do the task that you are seeing in your piece of paper, and this could be the start that you were waiting for it for a long time. So after doing that thing, please come back and listen to the rest of this episode, because in the 8th step, I want you to reward yourself immediately. Reward yourself immediately because of doing the first thing, because of taking the first step, because of starting before you were thinking that you're ready. So I want to tell you that you were ready. You know you were ready, but you thought you're not ready, because maybe you're a perfectionist or because you're procrastinat or anything. But the moment that you write it on a piece of paper, that these are the resources that I have of and based on those resources, you define a daily task for yourself and the moment that you do it, you understand that. Okay, you know that was not a big deal, and then you can understand that. So you were ready somehow. And okay, you are not a hundred percent ready, you are not perfectly ready, but you were ready. So you have done it and now you reward yourself immediately. Please do that, because this is one of the biggest steps that we need to take in order to help us to be motivated. And in the ninth place, now that you have done the very first step, I want you to hold yourself accountable in any ways that you can do. Maybe, in order to hold yourself accountable, you need to talk about this goal and you need to talk about this new decision to the family members or to someone, some of your friends or anyone, because in this way, whenever you're shouting out your goal, it can help you to be more motivated to stay on the path in order to do that thing on a regular basis. Or maybe you need to just tell a friend, you need to tell your husband, you need to, I don't know, tell someone, and I really can tell you that if you have an accountable partner for any one of your goals, it can help you. It can boost your productivity, it can boost the chance of succeeding in your goal in a ton of ways, and we're going to have a kind of accountability partner episode in the future, in the near future. I'm a huge, huge fan of having an accountability partner for any one of your goals. So Please is a stay tuned for that episode to but just know that whenever you hold yourself accountable in any ways, maybe it is just telling others that you have this goal, maybe it is just having an accountability partner or anything, the moment that you do that, it really increases your chance of succeeding. So let's wrap up all of the tangible steps that I've told you. In the first place, I wanted you to write down the goal or the task that you're procrastinating or the thing that you're wondering whether or not you can start. And the second place, I wanted you to be mindful of what are the reasons that lead to this kind of delay in starting, in doing that action, because it can help you to understand what are the root causes of this problem. The third step, I wanted you to define a deadline for your task or your goal, because it can help you to just do something sooner, do something sooner for that goal. In the fourth step,...

I wanted you to define your resources are, in the resources that you need and then in the next step, the resources that you have, because it can aid you to just see clearly what are the reasons that you're procrastinating, because it can help you to see that maybe in some of the areas you're ready, although you're not perfectly ready, but you're somehow ready to start some doing something. In the fifth step, I wanted to set a daily routine task in order to just tackle that action or that goal or anything, and then you need to prioritize it on your daily scheduled at least for some weeks in order to just enter the learning zone, and then when you're in the learning zone, everything is good to go. In the seventh step, I wanted you to start just now, so you need to set aside the pen and then go do that task and then come back listening to the rest of this episode. And in the eighth step, I'm wanted to reward yourself immediately, which was really important and it could help you in a ton of ways to stay motivated. And in the ninth step, I wanted you to hold yourself accountable in any ways that you need. Maybe you need to just shout it out to your family members, maybe you need to have a kind of accountability partner or anything. So with these nine steps, I myself am able to do the things that I'm really not comfortable to do and I can do them on a regular basis and all of a sudden I can find myself at the end of the spectrum, on the growth zone, and it really happened to me for more than I don't know, you know, there are countless, even the opportunities that have done that for their countless these days of my life and these days of my life. Maybe for others, they think that I have a really high self confidence, I'm so, so talented, that I do a lot of things at the same time, but maybe this was one of the secrets that I have, because I start before I'm ready, or at least with this new definition that I told you, and then it can help me after a while to grow.
